Wijnjewoude (Wynjewâld) is one of the older farmer's settlements in Opsterland.  Wijnjewoude lies between Bakkeveen and Hemrik, close to the eastern border of Opsterland, on the N31 (Oosterwolde - Drachten).

Duurswoude and Wijnjeterp were two regional villages which were founded in the late medieval times on a sand ridge between Alddjip (Koningsdiep) and Tjonger. In 1974, they were joined to form the village of Wijnjewoude.

The surroundings are park-like, and very attractive in terms of recreation.  The woodlands to the east of the village were planted in the second half of the 19th century, commissioned by the the family Lycklama à Nijeholt. Wijnjewoude is a village with a lot to do.  Wijnjewoude has several campsites, mini campsites and natural campsites.  There are many walking and cycling routes through gorgeous, green Wijnjewoude and the surroundings which include the beautiful Duurswouderheide between Bakkeveen and Wijnjewoude. This is the largest heathland in Friesland, with pingo ruins and a real flock of sheep.

The Jan Annebos is home to the idyllically located, stunning Freulevijver (pond).  On the grounds of the Staatsbosbeheer (Forestry Commission), you can walk along a nature path through the Wijnterper Schar and simultaneously enjoy the poetry on the poetry route, an extraordinary combination of nature and literature in three languages.

Wijnjewoude also lies along the Turfroute, the classic old recreational waterway through south-east Friesland.  You can moor at the Marrekrite-berth at the Velde's Bosch and at Klein Groningen, right next to the centre of Wijnjewoude.  From there, you can go on stunning walks and bike rides through the wooded eastern part of Opsterland, with Beetsterzwaag, Hemrik, Wijnjewoude and Bakkeveen.
