Bakkeveen

Bakkeveen (Bakkefean) is a beautiful village, close to the three provinces meeting point of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. An extraordinary part of Friesland, where the woodlands, heathland and dunes set the tone. Bakkeveen (Bakkefean) is a beautiful village, close to the three provinces meeting point of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. An extraordinary part of Friesland, where the woodlands, heathland and dunes set the tone.  A village with plenty of opportunities for wonderful walks, bike rides and also for holidays, because Bakkeveen has something for everyone.

The Bakkeveen Dunes border Bakkeveen.  These are a heathland and woodland area, which was left untouched by the peatland exploitation of the 19th century.  The whole of south-east Friesland would have looked like this two centuries ago.  A flock of sheep graze on the neighbouring heathland of Allardsoog and the heathland of Bakkeveen in the only sheepfold in Friesland.

Bakkeveen lies in the easterly river basin of the Koningsdiep or Alddijp river, which has its source to the north-east of Bakkeveen.  The Alddijp's river valley will slowly regain its original meandering course.

The Slotplaats estate at Bakkeveen is one of the larger Frisian woodland areas with a star shaped fort, a classical garden with a moat and stately beech avenue.  Behind the Slotplaats is the old coach house, which functions as the tourist office with an archaeological centre.
