Turfroute (Peat route)

The Turfroute is a recreational sailing route in Zuidoost Fryslân, the west of the province of Drenthe and the north of the province of Overijssel.

Tranquility and space

The forests, tree embankments, streams, heathlands and peatlands, wood lakes, rivers and canals make Zuidoost Fryslân into a very attractive area for tourist sailors. This area offers space and tranquility and the ambiance is very friendly and hospitable. Here you can unwind from the bustle of everyday life.

Extracting peat

Peat extraction has played a vital role in the shaping of the old landscape. Since the middle of the 16th century, peat grounds were excavated. Additionally, a network of waterways and districts arose. The part of the turfroute that is located in Zuidoost Fryslân mainly consists of the old waterways, such as the Opsterlandse Kompagnonsvaart. The peaceful sailing route, including many bridges and sluices, connects the villages and nature areas in the beautiful scenic landscape like a silver snake.
